Avatar on CD in less than a month!

avatarposter

It’s just a month until audiences get to see James Cameron’s Avatar, the visionary director’s ambitious science fiction drama that has been fifteen years in the making.  While it of course looks stunning from what little of it we’ve seen, the film music community is holding its breath to lay ears on the film’s score, one of the year’s most eagerly anticipated.

James Horner is of course responsible for the musical side of Avatar, a project which sees the composer writing his third score for Cameron.  Their last collaboration was of course a stupefying success for both men and the world is anxious to see and hear whether their latest cinematic voyage can live up to the sights and sounds of Titanic.

A James Cameron film is rarely an easy ride for a composer and this project has seen Horner spend an unprecedented amount of time on the project.  For over a year now he has been living and breathing Avatar, scoring the film in LA across a number of dates throughout that time.

Cameron apparently insisted he think of nothing else but his opus and as such the in demand composer has focused solely on this film and nothing else during 2009.

The time has been put to good use, with around three hours of music being written and recorded; but will it be worth the wait?  Well signs are fairly strong from what has been made available and if you go to the movie’s official website then you’ll be able to hear an edited selection from the score for yourself as you navigate.

The soundtrack album – which obviously features a much edited selection – is available on CD from December 14th, courtesy of Atlantic Records and we’ll have a review right here at Music from the Movies.com as soon as we can get our hands on a copy.  The film itself bursts onto screens the world over four days later on December 18th.
