| The Classic FM crowd do love a good film score and once again the station's listeners have been asked to choose their favourite soundtracks of all time. The results, featured in the October issue of Classic FM Magazine, see a fairly unsurprising list - in terms of the top ten as it seems to replicate the station's favoured playlist and indeed the scores most often represented on film music compilation albums and concert programmes of late. John Williams' Star Wars made it to the top spot once again, with his score for Schindler's List coming in fifth. Just missing out on the top spot is Howard Shore's score for The Fellowship of the Ring - though Return of the King is surely the superior effort - while Barry's Dances With Wolves and Out of Africa find themselves alongside each other at nine and ten. Morricone, Jarre, Zimmer and Vangelis are also represented in the top ten, while the ever popular Pirates of the Caribbean sees a nod for Klaus Badelt. |
Looking further down the list you'll find more gems of course and few unsung classics. Jerry Goldsmith finds himself represented by his seminal scores for Star Trek: The Motion Picture and The Omen - though way too far down the list for my liking - while Debbie Wiseman's glorious Wilde just misses out on a Top 50 slot, coming in at 51.
James Horner's highest charting is 12, with Titanic, followed much later (29th) by Braveheart. Williams and Morricone are of course further represented, as are the likes of Silvestri, Thomas Newman, Mikis Theodorakis, Yann Tiersen, Nino Rota, Elmer Bernstein, Ron Goodwin and more.
